A Detroit police officer died Sunday, four days after suffering gunshot wounds to his head and chest while on duty.
Officer Glenn Doss Jr., 25, was shot Wednesday while in his patrol car preparing to respond to a domestic violence call where an armed man reportedly assaulted two women, the Detroit News reported.
Officer Samuel Anderson, who was with him at the time, rushed Doss to the hospital while he radioed other officers in the area to warn them about an assailant at-large.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced that Doss died Sunday after spending four days in Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he was listed as being in critical condition.
“He fought a good fight,” Craig told reporters at a news conference. “He is truly what we call one of Detroit’s finest. He is what we call an American hero.”
Doss’s father, Glenn Doss Sr. is also a police officer and spoke at the news conference about how it was an “honor and a pleasure” to raise his son.
“I want to thank God for the 25 years that have allowed me the honor and pleasure to raise such a great young man,” Doss Sr. said.
Doss Jr. had been on the police force for two years and recently welcomed his first child Eli, now nine months old, into the world with his girlfriend Emily.
Police arrested suspect Decharlos O. Brooks, 43, and charged him with 33 counts, including eight counts of assault with intent to murder, in connection with Doss Jr.’s death.
Authorities also charged Brooks with 17 counts of felony firearms, seven counts of resisting and obstructing, and one count of carrying a dangerous weapon.
A GoFundMe account has been set up on behalf of Doss Jr.’s girlfriend to pay for his medical and funeral expenses. The account has raised over $40,000 as of Monday evening, exceeding its fundraising goal of $5,000.
