President Donald Trump hosted Congressional Republicans at the White House, delighted that Republicans in Congress had finally delivered on signature tax cut legislation.
Trump thanked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker Paul Ryan, and many other senators and members of Congress for their efforts to pull the bill across the finish line on Wednesday.
“I want to thank you, Mitch McConnell. What a job,” he said. “It’s always a lot of fun when you win.”
Trump also praised Speaker Paul Ryan for a job well done, calling him “a great Speaker.”
Ryan returned the complements to Trump, thanking him for his presidential leadership.
“Something this big, something this generational, something this profound could not have been done without exquisite presidential leadership,” Ryan said. “Mr. President, thank you for getting us across the finish line.”
The celebration event was held outside on the South Lawn of the White House, although it was 51 degrees in December. Christmas music was playing during the event for the “celebration.” It is unclear when Trump plans to sign the bill, but it could happen as early as next week.
Enthusiastic Republicans applauded and cheered several times during the president’s remarks as Trump allowed many of his Republican allies to speak from the podium.
“I mean, I look at these people, it’s like we’re warriors together,” Trump said.
The Congressional delegation from Alaska also celebrated the success of the bill, which included a decision to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for drilling.
Trump was delighted that he achieved the drilling measure, pointing out that it was something that previous Republicans failed to get done.
The president also singled out “a special friend of mine:” Sen. Orrin Hatch.
“Mr. President I have to say that you’re living up to everything I thought you would, you’re one heck of a leader,” Hatch said.
Hatch was effusive in his praise for Trump and predicted great things in the future for the United States if members of Congress would back the president. “Look at all the things that he has been able to get done, by sheer will in many ways,” he said.
