Hawaii Attorney General Douglas Chin — a Democrat who challenged President Donald Trump’s travel ban in federal court — announced Monday that he is running for Congress.

Chin, a vocal critic of the Trump administration who has served as Hawaii’s attorney general since 2015, said that he was inspired to run for Congress after witnessing and being a part of the legal battles over White House executive orders implemented over the past year, the Associated Press reported.

Chin is running for outgoing Rep. Colleen Hanabusa’s (D-HI) seat. Hanabusa is stepping down from Congress to run for governor of Hawaii in 2018.

Trump issued an executive order banning travel from seven Muslim-majority nations to the U.S. this year, and Chin sued to block the ban from being enacted. He argued that the Trump administration could not enforce it against relatives of those already in the U.S.

The Hawaii attorney general has sued over every updated version of the ban, although the Supreme Court ruled this month that the third version of Trump’s travel ban could be reinstated.

Chin also made his disdain for Attorney General Jeff Sessions known by joining five other attorneys general in asking the Senate to reject Sessions’ nomination for the post.
