Dr. Sebastian Gorka, Fox News national security strategist and former deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, praised the president’s national security strategy unveiled Monday, noting that American leadership “is back.”
“It’s all about peace through strength — America First but not America alone,” he told Breitbart News in an interview on Monday. “Leadership under Donald J. Trump is back. No more leading from behind, no more strategic patience.”
The NSS represents a stark departure from the last eight years under former President Obama, said Gorka, who participated in National Security Council meetings this year as the strategy was being debated.
“It’s all about America First. It actually opens with the line ‘putting America first is the duty of our government,'” he said. “It’s built around the concept of our sovereignty — that national sovereignty is key to a prosperous and safe nation.”
It’s a strategy based on a clear-eyed assessment of the world, with no political correctness, no censorship, and no filter, he said of the document, which is required by Congress of every administration.
“We’re not going to look at the world through some ideological lens,” he said. “We’re not the neoconservatives of the Bush years, and we’re not the apology tour, America-is-the-problem politicians of the Obama years,” he added.
For example, he noted the document actually uses the word “jihadism” and “jihadist,” which he said was “forbidden” during the Obama years.
“And it even mentions the threat of sharia law to this nation. So the president is Kryptonite and this document reflects that as well,” he said.
And there is also a frank assessment on China that goes farther than the Obama administration’s national security strategy.
“This document is very specific in its recognition that the strategic threat to America is China, with its ‘One Belt One Road’ strategy,” he said, referring to China’s plan to connect East Asia with Europe through Central Asia.
“It has openly advertised the fact that by the 100th anniversary of its Communist revolution in 2049, China has the intent to displace America as the strategy shaping force in the world,” he said.
But this document, he said, “is a shot across the bow of China.”
“This national security strategy goes into quite a distinct level of detail on how the growth of China’s influence actually is bad for American national security and the stability of the world writ large.”
He said, in that sense, the NSS challenges “fallacious constructs” going back 20 years when it was first assumed that engagement with China would turn it into positive and trustworthy actors and “our friends.”
There is also a frank discussion of Russia, he said, which will be to the dismay of the “fake news industrial complex” and Trump critics who claim the president is too soft on Moscow.
“One of the most delightful things I will enjoy in the next days and weeks is watching how the mainstream media, or rather, the fake news industrial complex will refuse to cover what this document says about Russia,” he said.
“They’re still spinning in their collusion, delusion world, their alternative reality, when in fact almost everything the administration has done with regards to Europe and Russia specifically has been bad for Vladimir Putin in the last 11 months,” he said.
“This document will lay the bedrock to an aggressive response to those measures Russia is taking to undermine our security and the security of our NATO allies and other friends,” he said.
He added: “We don’t look at those nations in terms of how we like them to be, but how they truly are.”
There is also a lot of discussion about protecting the homeland from unfettered immigration, which will please those who voted for the president in November, he said.
“We inherited a broken immigration system. Just look at the Russian roulette that is represented by the diversity lottery that brought one of the recent New York terrorists to our shores, or the chain migration that did the same,” he said.
But he said what is most different in the NSS from previous ones is the focus on the importance of a healthy economy.
There is a discussion on the continuing reduction of regulatory burdens, creating a simpler, fairer, pro-growth tax code, and fiscal responsibility. The document notes that the U.S. has a national debt that is now more than $20 trillion dollars.
“This document rightly describes that as a grave threat to our long-term prosperity and our national security,” he said.
