A New Jersey teacher resigned from her position Friday after a video captured her allegedly threatening a student using a racial slur.
The video, which was recorded by one of the students in the classroom at International High School in Paterson, begins as the teacher and the student appear to be in the midst of a verbal dispute.
The teacher allegedly screamed at the student, telling him that she would find someone to “cap your ass.”
“I’ll call my n—ers,” yelled the teacher, who is African-American, using a racial epithet. “I got n—ers, too.”
She also allegedly called the student a “dumbass.”
Later in the video, the teacher said, “I need five minutes to calm down.”
School officials launched an investigation into the incident Friday after the video spread on social media and the teacher resigned the same day.
“We are aware of the incident and the district conducted an immediate investigation. As a result, this teacher resigned on Friday, December 8th,” school district spokeswoman Terry Corallo said in a statement.
The teacher, however, said there is more to the incident than what the video shows. She claims the student threatened her three times the morning of the incident and had regularly caused trouble during homeroom.
“He threatened me. He threatened to have his friends come after me,” the teacher, Georgiana Jackson told the Paterson Press. “I don’t know whether he has any gang affiliation. But when he threatened me, I lost it.”
Jackson added that while she regrets her outburst against the student, she said she would not tolerate “disrespect” from him.
Teachers who have been caught on camera losing their cool with their students have faced consequences from their employers.
A Baltimore teacher was fired in November 2016 for calling a room full of black students n****** during an outburst that a student caught on video.
