President Donald Trump’s base of supporters wants the federal government to shut down unless a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border is constructed as promised.
A new Morning Consult/Politico poll shows that roughly 43 percent of Republican voters say they would like to see the GOP-led Congress stand firm on the border wall by shutting down the government unless the project is fully funded so that it can be quickly constructed.
Americans were promised at Trump’s swearing-in that a border wall would be constructed on the southern border to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking by a number of Mexican cartels. The project, though, has yet to begin, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has routinely prolonged it.
While Trump’s core base of supporters wants to see the border wall built soon, they are still very much opposed to giving amnesty to illegal aliens, an issue that Trump promised never to support unless pro-American immigration reforms to end illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration are enacted beforehand.
As Breitbart News reported, only about one in five swing voters, or roughly 20 percent, want a government shutdown to force an amnesty for illegal aliens shielded from deportation by the President Obama-created Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Likewise, 20 percent of Republican voters said the same:
The latest effort to pass pro-American immigration reforms — such as halving legal immigration to 500,000 immigrants a year by ending the process of “chain migration,” where new immigrants are allowed to bring their foreign relatives to the U.S. — has been coupled with an amnesty for DACA illegal aliens.
Currently, the U.S. admits about 1.5 million immigrants every year, driving down and keeping wages stagnant for America’s working and middle class while also crowding out Americans from the blue-collar workforce.
