Eric Cantor Says Roy Moore ‘Deserves to Lose’

Former House Majority leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) admitted that he was bothered by the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) decision to once again support Alabama Judge Roy Moore and argued that Moore “deserves to lose.”

Cantor admitted on CNN’s New Day, “I think he deserves to lose. When I was in office as Majority leader, I had the policy of zero tolerance for any of this kind of stuff.”

Cantor added, “And I just think that when people elect folks to public office, they expect their leaders to live to a much higher standard, and that’s what ought to be maintained.”

Cantor’s comments arose right after President Donald Trump backed Roy Moore for the Alabama Senate race. In a phone call to Moore, Trump said, “Go get them Roy.”

Cantor lost his 2014 re-election bid in 2014 to Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA), which served as a major victory for conservatives and populists. Cantor, who was in line to serve as the next Speaker of the House, lost to economics professor Dave Brat, who argued that a vote for Cantor would be a vote for “open borders” and that the Virginia 7th district might become the “last chance” to stop amnesty. The former House Majority Leader outspent Brat by ten to one; Cantor’s campaign spent nearly a million dollars trying to defeat Brat. However, a populist insurgency led by Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham ultimately defeated the House Majority Leader.

After President Trump offered his support for Moore, failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney argued that having Moore in the Senate would be a stain on the nation.

Romney tweeted on Monday, “Roy Moore in the US Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation. Leigh Corfman and other victims are courageous heroes. No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity.”

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who announced that he will not seek reelection in 2018 in October due to his low polling, also tweeted on Monday that “Mitt Romney is right.”

Flake tweeted on Monday, “@MittRomney is right. A Roy Moore victory is no victory for the GOP and the nation.”

A CBS poll revealed that 54 percent of likely Alabama voters do not believe the allegations against Roy Moore. The same poll also has Roy Moore in the lead against his Democratic opponent Doug Jones, 49 to 43 percent.

The RNC announced on Monday that they will once again back the Alabama Republican nominee after President Trump offered his support for Judge Roy Moore.

“We stand with the president,” a senior RNC official told Breitbart News on Monday.

Judge Roy Moore responded to Romney in a tweet on Monday, “Either @MittRomney has lost his courage or he doesn’t care about truth anymore. Sad day! America’s reawakening was led by @realDonaldTrump, not you Mitt. #DefeatTheElite #DrainTheSwamp.”
