White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders signaled that President Donald Trump would not call for Roy Moore to step aside from his Senate race in Alabama.
“[H]e thinks the people of Alabama should make the decision on who their next senator should be,” Sanders said at the White House press briefing on Thursday.
Sanders said that the allegations against Moore were “very troubling” and should be “taken seriously” but that it was up to voters in Alabama.
She repeated Trump’s previous statement that if the allegations were “proven true” then Moore should step aside.
When asked if Trump would campaign with Moore, Sanders replied, “Not that I’m aware of.”
She confirmed that the president supported the decision by the RNC to withdraw resources from the Alabama race, but repeated that voters in Alabama should ultimately decide who they wanted to represent them in the Senate.
Another reporter asked Sanders if the president would vote for Roy Moore, after hearing the allegations leveled against the Alabama senate candidate.
“The president is not a voter in Alabama,” she replied.
