On Tuesday DOD nominee Dr. Dean Winslow told the Senate Committee on Armed Services that it is “insane” that Americans can buy AR-15 rifles.
Winslow is nominated to be the Assistant Secretary Of Defense For Health Affairs.
His statement on AR-15s was unsolicited. He made it after answering a question about the Air Force reporting failure that allowed killer Devin Kelley to pass background check for a firearm.
Winslow answered the question then added, “I’d also like to, and I may get in trouble with other members of the committee, just say how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a fully auto, or a semi-automatic assault rifle like an AR-15, which apparently was the weapon that was used [in the Texas attack].”
It should be noted that AR-15 was also the rifle that Stephen Willeford used to shoot Devin Kelley and end the Texas church attack. And Willeford’s use of the rifle is a reminder that gun control aimed at getting rid of AR-15s would have guaranteed the law-abiding citizen lacked one for defense of congregants while in now way guaranteeing that criminals would comply with laws against possession of the rifles.
