President Donald Trump will appoint John Kelly’s aide Kirstjen Nielsen as DHS Secretary, according to a Politico report.
Nielsen, who worked with Kelly when he was the DHS Secretary, accompanied the former general to the White House when he took the chief of staff position in July and served as his top aide.
Previously she served George W. Bush on the White House Homeland Security Council and worked in the TSA.
Trump values the Department of Homeland Security because they are tasked with some of his most important promises such as border security and construction of his promised wall.
Nielsen is an unexpected pick, but demonstrates that the president has aligned with Kelly’s judgment for the position.
