Two Florida mothers who overdosed on heroin were found lying unconscious in a car Thursday with a pair of babies in the back seat, police said.
Kristen Leigh O’Connor, 28, and June Schweinhart, 29, allegedly shot some heroin while inside a car with their infant children, who were one and two months old, the New York Daily News reported.
“For whatever reason, they decided yesterday to buy heroin and then snorted it while inside the car with their children,” the Boynton Beach Police Department wrote on Facebook on Friday.
O’Connor and Schweinhart told Boynton Beach Police that the two met in a drug rehab program and bonded during their respective pregnancies.
O’Connor told investigators that she and Schweinhart bought $60 worth of heroin from her former drug dealer.
One of the women began to overdose while the other called 911, but then the other woman started convulsing, police said.
“Oh my God, oh my God,” Schweinhart said, according to O’Connor.
A passerby who witnessed the incident took the phone and informed the dispatcher what had happened.
The Florida Department of Children and Families took the children before releasing them into the custody of their relatives.
Authorities charged O’Connor and Schweinhart with child neglect and put them in jail after they were released from the hospital.
A judge ruled in a Friday hearing that O’Connor can only see the baby when her mother is around, according to the Palm Beach Post.
“We hope this serves as a wake-up call for these moms, and that they seek further treatment for their addiction,” Boynton Beach police said.
Sadly, cases of adults overdosing on heroin while in the car are not uncommon.
Police found an Ohio couple unconscious in their car from a heroin overdose with a four-year-old strapped in the back seat in September 2016.
