Police released dash cam footage of officers shooting at a woman after she opened fire at them following a car crash in North Carolina.
The incident occurred on Interstate 40 the morning of July 8 near Newton Grove, North Carolina, the Daily Mail reported.
The incident began when 911 dispatchers received a flood of calls from drivers reporting a white GMC Yukon XL SUV speeding on I-40.
Drivers claimed the operator of the vehicle was driving erratically and going up to 120 miles per hour, the Charlotte Observer reported.
The video shows an officer pulling over to the side of the highway to discover Tina Renee Medlin, 50, lying face down in the grass in front of a crashed SUV.
The officer gets out of his cruiser and begins to walk toward Medlin when a witness warns him that she is armed.
He shouted “let me see your hands” as he spotted a gun in Medlin’s possession.
Medlin hesitates, gets on her feet with one hand hidden, and starts shooting moments later.
The officer who spotted Medlin and another officer not pictured in the video fired back at Medlin, shooting her twice.
WNCN reports that officials rushed her to the hospital with serious injuries to her right arm and head. She later died from her injuries three days later on July 11.
The officers, North Carolina State Trooper J.L. Taylor and Johnston County Deputy Taylor Davis, were found to have acted appropriately in this situation and will not face criminal charges.
Officials said both officers “returned fire after being shot at by Tina Renee Medlin.”
“Under the circumstances observed by Trooper Taylor and Deputy Davis, their use of deadly force was both reasonable and warranted,” authorities said.
The state thought it was necessary to release the footage to explain why the officers were not charged.
