Judge Joseph J. Bruzzese Jr. pulled his concealed handgun and opened fire after coming under attack Monday outside Ohio’s Jefferson County Courthouse.
The attack occurred around 8 a.m.
According to CNN, Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla described the attack on Bruzzese as a “cold blooded, attempted murder on a judge.” The suspect allegedly approached Bruzzese as he walked toward the courthouse and opened fire, shooting him repeatedly in the stomach.
Somehow, Bruzzese still managed to draw his own weapon and return fire. A probation officer opened fire as well. The attacker was hit three times and died from his wounds. Sheriff Abdalla said they will have to remove “bullet slugs” from the suspect’s body to determine whether Bruzzese or the probation officer fired the fatal shot.
Abdalla said he had encouraged Bruzzese to carry a gun, saying, “If you’re sitting on the bench you have to carry a gun because there are so many nutcases out there that want retaliation.”
UK’s Independent reports that Bruzzese is in “stable condition.”
