A home invader allegedly shot a resident’s dog in the head on Monday before the resident fired a shotgun, fatally wounded the suspect.

The incident occurred in Marion County, Florida.

According to News 6, the resident said he was headed to bed when “four masked people entered his home and injured his dog.” The resident then barricaded himself in a room, and one of the four suspects allegedly tried to make entry.

The resident said, “I just heard my back door get kicked in and next thing I know, my dog ran out and I heard a gun shot. And the next thing I know, a guy was meeting me at my door with a gun, stuck the gun in my door. I slammed the door and the gun just started going off.”

The resident’s girlfriend was in the room, hiding inside a closet. The resident asked her to toss him his shotgun and said, “She threw the shotgun at me like in the movies and I caught and I fired one time, and I guess it hit the guy in the chest or whatever.” The suspect fled the home, got into a vehicle, and was dropped off at the Ocala Health Summerfield Emergency Room. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

No one else was injured during the incident.

The Ocala Star Banner reports that resident’s dog is a pit bull that is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.
