Surveillance video from a convenience store on Detroit’s west side shows a grandfather with a concealed carry permit shooting a 16-year-old suspect who allegedly tried to steal his gun.

The grandfather, 61-year-old Darius Summers, just recently received his permit to carry, and after the incident, he said, “I’d never been through this before, I’d never shot a gun before, all of this was new to me.”

According to WDIV 4, Summers walked into the corner gas station by his home. He said, “I just wanted some coffee.” But inside, an armed teenage suspect allegedly noticed that Summers was armed and tried to take his weapon.

The suspect allegedly stuck his gun in Summers’ back, and Summers responded by saying, “All I want to do is leave.” But the video makes it appear that the suspect kept turning Summers, moving him with the gun against his back. Summers said, “He was in control.”

Then the tables turned. Summers pulled his gun, quickly spun around, and shot the suspect in the stomach:

Prior to shooting the suspect, Summers said he tried to reason with him, saying, “Why you got to do this? This is unnecessary. [But] he insisted that he wanted my gun, so I gave it to him.”

The suspect has been identified as Xavier Futrell. He is charged with “assault with intent to murder, carrying a weapon with unlawful intent and a felony firearms violation.”
