An Indiana woman who allegedly drove 142 miles per hour (mph) and caused a fatal crash will be avoiding prison time.
An Allen County judge sentenced Stacey R. Motz-Altman, 38, to eight and a half years probation on the condition that she not drive, receive mental health treatment, and pay $29,000 to the fatal crash victim’s husband, WXIN reported.
WANE reported that Motz-Altman took a plea deal from prosecutors in June which ensured that she would avoid jail if she pleaded guilty but mentally ill to felony counts of reckless homicide and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
Motz-Altman must also serve the first year of her probation under house arrest with electronic monitoring.
A probable cause affidavit states that Motz-Altman had been going 142 mph in a 50 mph zone with her 2015 Infiniti Q50 sedan when she rear-ended a 2012 Chevrolet Impala in September 2016.
The impact shoved the Impala into the back of a semi tractor-trailer, leaving the driver, Luann Simon, 54, pinned inside the car’s wreckage, the Associated Press reported. She later died from her injuries.
Court records show that police were able to determine Motz-Altman’s speed shortly before the crash from her seat belt control module.
