During the June 21 airing of Breitbart News Daily on SiriusXM, Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) said Congress needs to pass national reciprocity and laws granting special carry ability for Congress.
Breitbart editor-in-chief Alex Marlow noted Brooks’ support of legislation to provide national concealed carry ability to members of Congress. Marlow said, “Your suggestion is arming all members of Congress so that they can have concealed carry. Give us a sense of what this legislation would look like and the viability it could have in the Congress.”
Brooks responded:
Well, let me break it down into two different parts. I have a concealed carry permit in the state of Alabama. My wife and I, we’ve got two Glocks in addition to a shotgun and a .22 in our house so we can defend ourselves should the circumstances arise. And I don’t know if the general public knows this, but … we get threats of physical, bodily harm and sometimes death threats on a periodic basis. It’s unfortunate, but that goes with the job.
It’s one thing to get these threats, which we tend to minimize or cast aside; it’s another thing to see someone whose allegiance … [lies with the] left wing of the political spectrum actually operate on it, as we saw last Wednesday.
He continued, “There are two things we should be able to do. One, we ought to be able to pass a reciprocity bill. If you’ve been approved for a concealed carry permit in one state, that ought to be good in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.”
He said the second thing needed is the creation of a system of national carry for members of Congress. We have “to recognize that congressmen are different from the regular citizens of the United States, and the difference is this: We are high-profile targets of lone wolf shooters, as we saw last Wednesday. We are also high-profile targets of Muslim and other terrorists, and that distinguishes us from the general public. The general public needs to have the right to bear arms to defend themselves from criminal activity.” He went on to say, “We not only have to be able to defend ourselves from criminal activity, but also from the high-profile target status that we are burdened with as members of the United States Congress.”
Brooks then asserted, “So I believe that congressmen, because of their high-profile status, should also be allowed to carry a concealed weapon without having to worry about getting arrested and being put in jail, as we would be in Washington, DC.”
