A Wisconsin driver who had a bit too much to drink one night decided not to drink and drive and, instead, left his car overnight in a metered parking lot.
The driver, however, managed to avoid getting ticketed by leaving a “pity” note on his car, WGN reported.
“Please take pity on me. I walked home … safe choices,” read the driver’s handwritten note.
When the officer found the note, he decided to go easy on the driver. The officer issued a warning but also left a handwritten note that said, “Pity Granted, Just A Warning”:
The Wausau Police Department posted a photo of the officer’s reply on its Facebook page Monday with the caption saying that Officer Jim Hellrood, the officer who issued the ticket, “can appreciate people making safe choices, and a good sense of humor.”
Wausau Police Department Lt. Cord Buckner said he has not dealt with a situation like this before in the area but is happy the unnamed driver did not decide to drink and drive.
“[This driver] realized it may not have been a safe choice and risked a citation rather than risk their own safety,” Buckner told CBS News. “We certainly applaud that decision to not drive.”
