On Saturday, thousands of anti-Trump protesters rallied throughout the United States in the “March for Truth,” where they called for an independent commission to investigate alleged collusion between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia and renewed calls for him to release his tax returns.
“The Russians intervened with our election,” Rep. Nydia Velasquez (D-NY) shouted from the stage at Foley Square Park in New York City on Saturday. “They wanted to get Donald Trump elected because they believe his vision is good for Russia.”
She called for “an independent, 9/11-style commission” to investigate Russian intervention into the 2016 election.
There is still no evidence that Trump colluded with the Russians.
Those gathered held up signs that called for Trump’s impeachment. One sign read, “Did Nazi This Coming.” Another sign read, “Covfefe = Liar,” and many others similarly insulted the commander-in-chief and his associates in the White House.
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) told the crowd that Saturday’s nationally-coordinated marches give him and his colleagues the strength to continue with the work they’re doing in Congress.
After he spoke, two female singers played their own rendition of “This Land Is Your Land.” They altered the opening to sing, “They built a big, stupid, moronic, racist, misogynistic, homophobic, wall.” There was a sole Trump supporter holding up and waving a flag that had “TRUMP 2020” written on it.
Almost all the speakers called for Trump to release his taxes. Not every president has released his taxes.
“I am proud to be a New Yorker today,” Beau Willimon, the creator of American political drama series “House of Cards” told those gathered. He flew from Los Angeles to speak and march at Saturday’s event. He said that while he writes scripts for a living, he “didn’t write a script for what I was going to say today because when you speak truth to power you don’t need a script. the truth is self-evident. You are the truth.” Willimon added, “And the truth is also that we have a fraudulent con man in the White House who is threatening the foundations of our democracy.”
He claimed that while he was on his flight, he looked down over the states he was flying over and thought, “there are 300 million people down there. Liberal, conservative, independent. There are people that vehemently supported Trump. There are people that vehemently don’t support him. But he has lied to all 300 million of them.”
Coordinated protests were held in over 100 cities across the United States, including Washington, Pittsburgh and Chicago.
The “March for Truth” in Washington took place on the National Mall. There, Jon Lovett — a speechwriter for former President Barack Obama — said, “Eventually, you wake up with a knot in your gut about what the president might do or say.” He reportedly added, “We can take back the White House.”
Leftist Sharia law advocate and anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour also spoke in Washington. “The people are woke, we are woke,” Sarsour reportedly said. She was one of the organizers of the Women’s March against President Trump that took place the day after his inauguration. She reportedly added, “We will not go back to sleep.”
Mere blocks away, a pro-Trump “Pittsburgh Not Paris” rally was held in support of his withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. During his announcement that the United States would withdraw from the 2015 Paris deal on Thursday, President Trump said, “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris. It is time to put Youngstown, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania… before Paris, France.”
