A Cook County judge was killed and a woman was injured in a shooting that took place in the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, police say.
Police say the judge and his female companion may have been victims of an attempted robbery, even though it did not appear that the gunman took any possessions from the judge or the woman, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The woman, 52, encountered the gunman at the garage of Judge Raymond Miles’ two-story brick home on the 9400 block of South Forest Avenue around 4:50 a.m., police said. The woman exchanged words with the gunman before she was shot in the leg.
“Upon hearing the commotion and the gunshot, Judge (Raymond) Myles exited his residence,” Melissa Staples, the chief of detectives, said at a news conference at police headquarters. “(He) exchanged words with the offender before he was fatally shot multiple times.”
Chicago police responded to a call of shots fired at near 94th and S. Forest just before 5 a.m., WGN reported.
Police found Miles, 66, lying on the ground along with the woman. Miles was pronounced dead at Christ Hospital, while the woman is being treated for a gunshot wound to the leg. She is expected to recover.
Detectives say they are not sure if the judge’s work had to do anything with the shooting.
Staples said detectives were pursuing possible leads and reviewing surveillance footage from security cameras in the neighborhood.
Myles was an associate judge in Cook County Circuit Court’s Criminal Division, where he presided over several high-profile cases.
Detectives could not get an accurate description of the suspect, but said he fled on foot and then possibly used a car nearby to get away.
The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who can give them information that leads to an arrest, Staples said.
