Police: Homeowner Who Shot, Killed Masked Suspect Did ‘What Was Necessary’

Police in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, say a homeowner who shot and killed a masked home invasion suspect did “what was necessary to protect his family.”

Moncks Corner Police Chief Rick Ollic said the deceased suspect — 30-year-old Elijah Akeem White Jr — was carrying rope and a gun. Ollic  said, “It’s believed that he was going to tie up the residents. There was no doubt he was there to do some serious harm to this family.”

The Post and Courier reported the alleged home invasion began when a female suspect knocked on the door posing as an official from the homeowners association. When the wife came to the door, the female suspect waved for White to approach. White was wearing gloves and a mask, and the wife screamed and slammed the door.

“Seeing a masked gunman approach was terrifying,” Ollic said. “She was able to shut and lock the door. It got chaotic. She screamed for her husband.”

White kicked in the door, but the homeowner — 28-year-old Justin Washington — shot White multiple times. White’s body was discovered lying outside another home about 15 minutes later.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said, “In Berkeley County, if you kick someone’s door in and you get shot, as long as I’m coroner, that will be justifiable homicide.”
