White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer argued that conservatives should support the House Obamacare replacement bill, insisting that it was good for businesses and that the Chamber of Commerce supported it.
“There’s been tremendous support for this. We’ve had people throughout Washington D.C. going to different associations and groups throughout the day, the last couple of days, talking to them about the benefits of this,” he said.
Spicer also cited the Americans for Tax Reform, Americans Taxpayer Union, and the American Legislative Exchange Council as three other conservative groups who support the bill, as well as business groups such as the Medical Device Manufacturing Association One Nation Health, Consumer Health Products Association, the Association of AMAC, and the National Association of Wholesale Distributors.
But more muscular conservative grassroots groups like Heritage Action, Club For Growth, Freedomworks, and Americans for Prosperity have opposed the bill, calling it “Obamacare Lite” or “Ryan Care” or “Obamacare 2.0.”
Spicer said that conservatives should remember that self-employed citizens and small businesses were suffering under Obamacare, and that the bill revealed by House leadership would help them by “leveling the playing field.”
“We are enacting, I think, a very strong conservative values in healthcare that gives all Americans more choice at a lower cost,” he said. “So, I think that should be a very positive message.”
