A former high school teacher has been arrested and accused of having an improper sexual relationship with a student, authorities in North Carolina say.

ABC 11 reported that Rebecca Shea Reeves, 33, was arrested on February 23 after an investigation into her relationship with a 16-year-old male student at Southern Nash High School in Bailey, North Carolina, a town just east of Raleigh.

Reeves, an assistant coach and teacher of family and consumer sciences, was arrested in Madison County after the Nash County Sheriff’s office contacted Madison that Reeves was in their jurisdiction.

An investigation into the possible sexual relationship began after someone overheard the now 17-year-old male student talking about his experience with the teacher. Police decided they had probable cause for an arrest after the investigation began.

It appears that Reeves fled her home and hastily moved to Madison County after administrators at Southern Nash High School learned of her alleged relationship with the student.

The Nash-Rocky Mount school district had scheduled a meeting with Reeves to discuss the accusations, but Reeves did not appear. School officials then terminated her employment, according to the Rocky Mount Telegram.

The relationship supposedly began last October, but the mother of the student is not positive that there ever was a relationship. The woman told the Telegram that she thought the boy may have been joking about the whole thing and hoped that the teacher didn’t lose her job unfairly.
