An elite private prep school in Manhattan has canceled a skating party at the Trump Wollman Rink in Central Park after parents reportedly protested the event.
The Parents’f v Association at The Dalton School announced the cancellation of the skating event because of “significantly lower attendance,” reports the New York Post.
Photos of past skating parties at Trump Wollman Rink are featured on the Parents Association web page of the school’s site.
According to the Post, not all parents agree with the decision to scrap the event, which was reportedly urged by a group of “liberal moms.”
“I think it is completely insane,” one Dalton parent reportedly said. “Like him or not, it feels like a strange place for New Yorkers to protest. And sad that kids now have no skating party.”
Forbes tells the story of the Wollman Rink “fiasco” and how Donald Trump saved the rink after the city’s bungling left it closed for years:
In late May of 1986, the 39-year-old Trump made an offer to Mayor Ed Koch. Trump would step in and take over the construction and operation of the project for no profit and have it up and running in time for the holiday season. Koch tried mightily and quite sneakily tried to reject Trump’s offer. A very public Trump-Koch feud ensued; Donald ultimately prevailed taking on the responsibility to finish the rink in less than six months for no more than $3 million. The city politicos could only hope that when Donald failed it would divert attention from their own incompetence.
Instead of failing, Trump finished the job in just four months at a final cost 25% below the budget. It wasn’t rocket science according to Trump. It was common sense and “management.”
Tuition at the Upper East Side school is currently at $44,640 per year.
According to the Daily Mail, CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper and actresses Claire Danes and Jennifer Grey are alumni of the Dalton School.
