On December 23, a robbery suspect was shot in the neck, chest, and abdomen after allegedly pulling a gun and demanding money in a Subway sandwich shop.
According to WPXI, the incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and police said “47-year-old Calvin Leon Smith entered the Subway, showed what appeared to be a real gun and demanded money.”
One of the Subway employees, who had a concealed carry permit and a Glock 9mm, opened fire. Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said, “One of the employees who has a concealed-carry permit and has a firearm apparently felt threatened for him and the other employees in the store, and shot the actor at least once.”
Further investigation revealed that Smith was actually shot three times–once in the neck, once in the chest, and once in the abdomen.
Smith fled the scene via a window that had been shattered during the alleged attempted robbery and climbed into a car with a man and woman, who drove him to the hospital. The couple who gave Smith a ride said they did not know he had allegedly committed a robbery and only learned that he had been shot upon hearing him call someone while in the car to tell them he had, in fact, been shot.
Smith is in “serious condition” and will face charges of “robbery and possessing instruments of crime” if he survives.
Police later determined that Smith’s “real gun” was a BB gun.
