Sgt. Ke’Aundrae Sims was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and has been undergoing chemotherapy every day where he is stationed in Oregon while his son and wife live in Atoka, Oklahoma, KFOR reports.
“It was a sudden life changing moment for me, so it really took my life in a new direction,” Sims told KTEN.
He knows there is a possibility he will not get better, so his final wish was to spend Christmas with his five-year-old son, Ke’Aundrae.
“When I told Dre his daddy had cancer, he said, my daddy’s going to go to heaven,” said Ke’Aundrae’s mother, Amy Kilpatrick.
The family was not sure how they would be able to make it to Oregon this holiday season, so a family member set up a “YouCaring” page to help raise money to send Ke’Aundrae and his mother.
“He’s little and doesn’t fully understand, but in the future it would mean more to him than probably any other Christmas ever will,” Kilpatrick said.
A secret Santa then donated enough flyer miles to send Ke’Aundrae and his mother to Oregon for the holidays. Their lodging is also paid for.
The two will fly out to Portland on Christmas Eve and will return on December 27.
