President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team ridiculed reports that failed Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was seeking a recount in Wisconsin, calling it a “nonsensical” fundraising effort.
“It’s been ridiculous that so much oxygen has been given to the recount effort where there’s absolutely no chance of the election results changing,” Trump transition spokesman Jason Miller said in a call with reporters.
Miller indicated that Trump’s tweets about illegal immigrants voting illegally on Sunday were to highlight real issues of voting disparities, an issue that the president-elect focused on during the campaign.
“If this much attention and oxygen is being given to completely frivolous throw-away fundraising schemes by some one like Jill Stein, then there should be actual substantive looks at overall examples of voter fraud and illegal immigrants voting in recent years,” he said.
Miller cited evidence used during the campaign to defend Trump’s claims about voter fraud, but did not have any new data to cite from the 2016 election. Some voting watchdog groups have announced plans to investigate the 2016 data for illegal voting.
