President-elect Donald Trump says Cuba needs to provide a better deal for its people and the United States if the country wants to continue enjoying the thawed economic relations achieved during the Obama administration.
“If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday.
Trump’s position on Cuba was previewed by his incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus on Fox News Sunday.
“He’s been willing to talk to anybody, but we’ve got to have a better deal,” he explained. “We’re not going to have a unilateral deal coming from Cuba back to the United States without some changes in their government.”
Trump reacted to the death of Fidel Castro by calling him a “brutal dictator,” while Obama’s statement was more diplomatic and offered “condolences” to the Castro family.
Obama tried to thaw the economic embargo with Cuba, restoring diplomatic ties with the communist country in 2015. His administration also restored flights between the two countries and allowed Americans traveling in the country to bring more Cuban products back to the United States.
