Former Washington, D.C. chancellor of schools Michelle Rhee announced on Twitter Tuesday that she is “not pursuing” the position of U.S. Secretary of Education in the Trump administration.
Rhee, a Democrat, tweeted the following:
A supporter of Common Core, Rhee would have been a controversial choice for President-elect Donald Trump, who repeatedly said on the campaign trail that Common Core is a “disaster.”
Like others reported to be on Trump’s short list of candidates for the education post, Rhee is a supporter of school vouchers, which she has said should be “highly regulated.” Vouchers have been shown to bring about the greatest amount of regulation to private schools among the methods used to achieve school choice.
Rhee is married to the outgoing mayor of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson, and she currently chairs the board of St. HOPE Public Schools, the charter school organization founded by him.
