During the October 28 airing of CNN’s Newsroom with Carol Costello, gun control proponent Mark Kelly rejected the idea that Hillary Clinton wants to ban certain types of guns and said she simply wants to “[keep] communities and families safe.”
Meanwhile, Clinton is campaigning on an “assault weapons” ban, which the Washington Times reports would ban “some of the most popular firearms” in America if implemented.
Moreover, the WikiLeaks’ Podesta email release highlights her support of a 25 percent tax on gun sales. Such a tax becomes a de facto gun ban that raises the price of a $400 gun to $500, effectively pricing all types of guns out of reach for poorer families. Through this approach, Clinton is able to make gun ownership financially prohibitive without having to go on record as actually banning firearms.
But Mark Kelly assured Costello’s viewers that Clinton has no plan to go after guns.
Costello said, “There is still that sentiment out there, and it’s very strong, that Hillary Clinton means to take away people’s guns. You know, we hear that all the time. How does she convince people [otherwise] because she says that’s not what it’s about with her?”
Kelly responded:
I don’t know. She says that over and over again, that she’s not in favor of getting rid of the Second Amendment, that she supports gun ownership of responsible people. I think that’s all she can do, You know, ultimately we’re all going to see through her actions when she’s elected president. But, I don’t believe for one second that she has another agenda with regards to the Second Amendment. She talks about keeping communities and families safe.
Kelly then stressed that Clinton will push to expand background checks to every gun sale, which he described as a “very clear” way to keep people safe. Kelly did not mention that his wife, Gabby Giffords, was shot by a man who acquired his gun via a background check.
