Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) is sponsoring a presentation of the Guns in the Hands of Artists exhibition in Washington DC October 3-7.
The exhibit is a product of the Guns in the Hands of Artists Foundation, which seeks to “promote community based activist art as a means of opening a dialogue around guns, gun ideology, and gun violence in contemporary American society.”
The gun control art exhibit is being displayed in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building.
According to PR Newswire, the art exhibit coincides with the release of a book of the same name, Guns in the Hands of Artists. It is “a 224-page book featuring artworks paired with essays on guns and gun violence.” Two of the essay authors are gun control proponents Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. On January 8, 2011, Giffords was shot and wounded by an attacker who had acquired a gun via a background check. Two years later, Giffords and her husband began pushing to require all would-be gun owners to pass the same check Giffords’s attacker passed.
Kaine released a statement on the gun control art exhibit:
We have a decision to make about what matters to us… Gun violence has been ever-present throughout my time in public service, but my past experiences have taught me that no matter how tough our problems may be, they pale in comparison to the combined will of the American people who are determined to make our communities safer. I look forward to the day when we, as elected officials and Americans, live up to our responsibilities and put an end to this crisis.
