On September 14, Missouri lawmakers will convene with the opportunity to override Governor Jay Nixon’s (D) veto of SB 656, permitless carry.
The permitless carry bill would expand the exercise of “the fundamental right to self-defense of Missourians and strengthen their ability to protect themselves and their families” by doing away with the requirement that law-abiding Missourians go through a permitting process to exercise Second Amendment rights.
By overriding the veto, lawmakers will allow Missouri to join Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Montana, Vermont, Wyoming, and West Virginia on the list of states that recognize the Second Amendment as a sufficient concealed carry permit for law-abiding residents.
According to the NRA-ILA, Micheal Bloomberg-funded Everytown for Gun Safety is hard at work in Missouri trying to convince lawmakers not to override the veto of the bill that had passed with “overwhelming support” during the legislative session.
The NRA-ILA equates Bloomberg’s opposition to the expanded exercise of Second Amendment rights with the same freedom-crushing gun control efforts that have been relentlessly pushed by the Obama administration — these are the same anti-gun, anti-freedom efforts which Hillary Clinton promises to continue if elected.
On June 28, Breitbart News reported that Missouri Senate Majority Floor Leader Mike Kehoe (R-Dist. 6) indicated he and his GOP colleagues were ready to override Nixon’s veto. And The Kansas City Star reported that House Speaker Todd Richardson (R-Dist. 152) said the House will override the veto if an override attempt prevails in the Senate.
Richardson said:
This is why the people of Missouri elected a super-majority of conservative supporters of the 2nd amendment to the House and the Senate. Senate Bill 656 is the first meaningful step forward on gun rights in over a decade; it passed both chambers with more than enough votes to override the governor’s veto.
