A former drug-addict turned respected local car wash owner, who used his business to give others a second chance, was allegedly beaten to death by two men after an argument gone awry.
Michael Mansfield, 52, died after Steven Rosser, 26, knocked him unconscious at a sports bar during an argument, The Fayetteville Observer reported.
The Observer reported that, after Rosser knocked Mansfield unconscious, Hubert Underwood II, 37, and Rosser repeatedly punched Mansfield in the head while he lay there and then drove away.
Mansfield was taken to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries, WYFF reported.
Mansfield was profiled by The Fayetteville Observer in 2014 for his work giving drug-users a second chance at his car wash.
A former drug-user himself, Mansfield converted to Christianity in 1999 and used his business to help others with a history of drug abuse that other employers would refuse to hire, The Observer reported.
The business, known as the “Jesus Car Wash,” welcomed those who were seeking redemption with painted signs such as “U R important 2 God” and “Don’t forget to smile.”
Mansfield often held food and clothing drives at his business as well as church services.
The Observer reported that multiple prayer vigils have been scheduled to honor Mansfield.
Underwood and Rosser have been charged with first-degree murder and are currently being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
