On August 28, Moms Demand Action founder Shannon Watts reacted to NRA criticism of Hillary Clinton’s gun control plans by suggesting the NRA’s fight against gun control is an “attack on Americans.”
Watts intervened for Clinton via Twitter after the NRA tweeted about the dangers posed by a potential Supreme Court filled with Clinton nominees.
The NRA tweeted: “The attack on #2A is clear. A Clinton SCOTUS would hack away at our #2A rights.” They ended the tweet with “#Guns” and “#NeverHillary.”
Watts responded: “Attack on Americans clear: [NRA] lobbyists paid millions to hack away at lifesaving gun laws.” Watts ended her tweet by voicing her support for Clinton via the hashtag “#ImWithHer.”
It is interesting to note that Watts did not argue with the NRA’s key point, namely, that Clinton plans to use the Supreme Court to go after the Second Amendment. Rather, Watts tried to deflect the NRA’s point with a subtle accusation that an attack on gun control is an “attack on Americans.” It is also interesting to note how she tried to present recently defeated gun controls as “lifesaving gun laws.” But the word “lifesaving” is a difficult one to use when the most prominent gun control push in recent years has revolved around universal background checks.
After all, the Orlando gunman passed background checks for his guns, did that save lives? The San Bernardino attackers passed background checks for their handguns, did that save lives? The April 2014 and November 2009 Fort Hood attackers passed background checks for their weapons, did that save lives? The Aurora movie theater gunman passed a background check for his firearms, did that save lives?
The answer in every case is no.
