The world-class child brain surgeon who ran for the 2016 GOP nomination for president told thousands of supporters of Donald J. Trump Thursday in Manchester, New Hampshire that he was working with Trump to develop programs to help minority communities.
“The fact of the matter is that if they are not doing well, the whole country is going to have a problem,” said Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, who for almost 30 years was the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.
“We’re all in the same boat and if part of the boat is sinking the rest of us are going down, too,” he said.
“That’s why we’re called the United States of America, not the ‘Divided States of America.
Carson, who is an African-American born in Detroit, growing up in terrible poverty and depressing conditions, said that he and Donald Trump are on the same page with it comes to the need to open up opportunities for all Americans.
“One of the things I have had numerous conversations about with Donald Trump is the potential of our people and the importance of education again,” he said.
The pediatric neurosurgeon, who successfully separated two Siamese twin girls joined at the skull, said America’s Founding Fathers valued education because democracy depends on an informed electorate.
When Trump took the stage, he talked about his own view of the choice facing African-Americans.
This is the year that the people who have been betrayed by Democratic policies, including millions of African-American and Hispanic-American citizens, reject the politicians who have failed them and vote for change. As I’ve discussed for many days now, Democratic politicians have run nearly every inner city in America for fifty or sixty years or more.
Their policies have produced only more poverty, joblessness, and failing schools. Every policy Hillary Clinton supports is a policy that has failed and betrayed communities of color in this country.
But she just doesn’t care – she’s too busy raking in cash from the people rigging the system.
Carson’s appearing and traveling with Trump is part of his campaign’s refreshed outreach to minority voters, following up on upticks in support of Trump in the polls among Hispanic and African-American voters.
Thursday the Detroit Free Press reported that Carson will take Trump on a tour of his hometown to give him a better perspective on life in the inner cities.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is expected to head to Detroit in early September to try to shore up his standing with African-American voters.
According to Wayne Bradley, director of the Michigan Republican Party’s Detroit office, Trump will speak with business and faith-based leaders to deliver his message that Democratic policies have destroyed cities like Detroit. He also may be accompanied by former GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon who grew up in poverty in southwest Detroit.
In 2012, President Barack Obama garnered 93 percent of the black vote, which was his margin of victory in seven states for a total of 112 electoral votes. Any progress Trump makes into that level of support disrupts the Democratic turnout model up and down the ticket.
