Priorities USA, a Super PAC supporting Hillary Clinton, is airing a new campaign ad against Donald Trump, but is using one of the Republican nominee’s quotes out of context.
The ad, titled, “Watching,” shows Trump saying: “You have to be wealthy in order to be great. I’m sorry to say it” and then the clip shows a working-class white man looking at Trump in response.
The Washington Post reports the quote is “wrenched out of context.”
The Post notes:
During a May 26 campaign stop in North Dakota, a pre-teleprompter Trump was making a standard point about how he’d lead America to prosperity when he started in on “wealth.”
“There’s one more thing we have to do to make America wealthy again,” he said. “And you have to be wealthy in order to be great, I’m sorry to say it.”
Despite Trump’s quote being taken out of context, some pundits have continued to argue that it reveals the New York real estate mogul hates poor people.
Another one of Trump’s infamous quotes played in the ad is the one where he appears to be making fun of a disabled reporter. The Post reports that focus groups have called this gaffe of Trump’s his most offensive moment.
