A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of Eastman Police patrolman Tim Smith on Saturday night.
The suspect, 24-year-old Royheem Delshawn Deeds, was arrested in Nassau County, Florida.
According to USA Today, “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation [GBI] said Smith, 31, was killed when he got out of his patrol car and confronted the suspect while responding to a 911 call about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.”
A statement from GBI makes clear that Smith was responding to a “suspicious persons” call and was shot as he “exited his patrol car to investigate.” Although the wound proved fatal, Smith was able to return fire as the suspect fled.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that officer Smith “was not wearing a protective vest.”
Smith was a father of three and “had been with the Eastman Police Department since February 2011.”
Also, a Marietta, Georgia, officer was reportedly “shot in the leg” a few hours later by a 15-year-old with a stolen gun, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
