WikiLeaks is offering $20,000 for any information that leads to a conviction in the recent murder of Seth Rich, who was a 27-year-old staffer at the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
The reward comes as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange hinted Rich was the source of the leaked controversial DNC emails. He made the comment during an interview with Nieuswsuur, a Dutch television program.
WikiLeaks published the thousands of leaked emails from within the DNC that showed the DNC favoring Hillary Clinton over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), leading to the exit of Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz as a result of the leak.
“Whistle-blowers go to significant efforts to get us material and often very significant risks,” Assange stated in the Dutch TV interview, according to Fox News. “As a 27-year-old, works for the DNC, was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington.”
Assange pushed back on the theory that Rich was killed in a robbery attempt, which is what the police have stated as the probable cause of his murder.
“No,” Assange responded. “There’s no finding. So… I’m suggesting that our sources take risks.”
He was pressed on whether or not Rich was the person who leaked the DNC emails to WikiLeaks, but Assange stated his organization won’t reveal its sources.
Rich was shot multiple times on July 10, a Sunday, around 4:19 a.m. walking to his apartment in the Bloomingdale neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C.
Police have suggested the crime was an attempted robbery, although nothing was taken from Rich, according to The Hill.
D.C. police are also offering a reward of $25,000 for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case.
