Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton warns that more diseases like the Zika virus could make their way to the United States as a result of climate change.
“I also just want to underscore, we need a public health system that really works for everybody, because with changes in climate, more and more diseases are going find their way right here to the United States that before we did not see,” she said during an event in Florida highlighting the threat of Zika to the United States.
Clinton called for Republicans to demand Congress return to Washington to pass more spending for the government to fight Zika.
“I disagree with those who say that Zika is an insignificant issue,” Clinton said, referring to Donald Trump, who has spent more time in Florida talking about jobs and the economy.
Trump has referred the issue to the state’s Republican governor Rick Scott.
“You have a great governor who’s doing a fantastic job, Rick Scott, on the Zika. And it’s a problem. It’s a big problem. But I watch and I see. And I see what they’re doing with the spraying and everything else. And I think he’s doing a fantastic job and he’s letting everyone know exactly what the problem is and how to get rid of it. He’s going to have it under control, he probably already does,” Trump said in an interview with WPEC news.
