Speaking to the Republican National Convention, House Speaker Paul Ryan called for Republicans to unify behind Donald Trump as their presidential candidate and fight for victory in November.
“What do you say that we unify this party at this crucial moment when unity is everything?” he asked the audience of delegates.
He urged Republicans to look forward to a conservative majority, and not hold anything back in 2016.
“Let’s see this thing through. Let’s win this thing,” he said. “Let’s show America our best and nothing less.”
Ryan acknowledged that Republicans had just fought through a competitive primary, but optimistically attributed it to a healthy process for the party.
“You and I call those signs of life, signs of a party that’s not just going through the motions, not just mouthing new words for the same old stuff,” he said.
Ryan indicated that he looked forward to working with a future Vice President Mike Pence and President Donald Trump in 2017.
“The next time that there’s a state of the union address, I don’t know where Joe Biden or Barack Obama are going to be, but you’ll find me right there on the rostrum with Vice President Mike Pence and President Donald Trump,” he said as the delegates shouted, “Trump, Trump, Trump!”
Ryan disparaged the notion of a Hillary Clinton presidency as going backwards.
“They are offering a third Obama term brought to you by another Clinton — and you are supposed to be excited about that?” he asked.
He warned that Clinton and the Democrats were campaigning as a “politically correct infomercial” instead of offering more of the same.
“Only with Donald Trump and Mike Pence do we have a chance at a better way,” he said.
