CLEVELAND, OHIO — Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell delivered a passionate speech at the RNC convention Monday night. Luttrell was introduced by former Texas Governor Rick Perry and at one point decided to stop reading his speech from the teleprompter and speak to the crowd from the heart.
Sticking to Monday’s theme, Luttrell spoke about making America safe by honoring our veterans and maintaining an elite military.
“We have to make sure the hell the veterans come home from is not the hell they come back to,” Luttrell said. “I got to spend time with Mr. Trump and I know he understands what it’s going to take to fix this. The only way we’re going to keep America safe is with an elite military.”
After just a couple minutes, Luttrell noted that he wasn’t used to reading a speech from a teleprompter and decided to “speak from the heart.”
“Hold them accountable for every position and office they hold,” Luttrell ad-libbed. “Either way, the only way survive this is together, not apart. The only way for life to matter is if every life matters.”
Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross after being the “lone survivor” of an operation that later became a best-selling book and movie. He addressed the next generation of Americans.
“To the next generation, your war is here, you don’t have to find it,” Luttrell explained off script. “Who among you will love something more than you love yourself? I challenge all of you to fight for this country and each and every one of us.”
Keeping his remarks short, the American hero finished with humility.
“Thank you for allowing me to serve you for 20 years and I swear to God I’m going to spend the next twenty paying you back! God bless you!”
