Democrat Representative: Even a ‘Non-Lawyer’ Knows Second Amendment Protects Muskets, Not ‘Assault Weapons’

Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ-12) said even a “non-lawyer” knows the Second Amendment protects muskets, not “assault weapons.”

Coleman suggested that contentions to the contrary have always bothered her.

She said, “This is something, as a non-lawyer, that I have had trouble with from the very beginning. When the framers of our Constitution considered the Second Amendment, they were talking about muskets. They were not talking about ‘assault weapons.'”

She went on to say:

There are so many gun laws that we need to impose that will protect our communities more and more and more. And eliminating “assault weapons” is definitely at the very top, as well as limiting who can get ammunition and whether or not you can buy it online.

….

But the only reason you have an “assault weapon” is because you want to kill quickly, and you want to create as many fatalities as possible. These are weapons of war, and they have no place in a civil society.

Coleman’s  comments were delivered while standing by stacks of boxes containing the names of people who signed a petition for an “assault weapons” ban. The boxes were covered with “MoveOn.Org,” “Moms Rising,” and “Democracy for America” fliers. A child also stood near Coleman and was holding a flier that read, “I Say No to #WeaponsOfWar.”
