Speaker of the House Rep. Paul Ryan is responding to the ambush attack on law enforcement officers in Dallas during a street protest where several police officers were killed, saying Americans shouldn’t, “lose sight of the values that unite us.”

“There will be a temptation to let our anger harden our divisions. Let’s not let that happen,” Ryan stressed to his fellow members of Congress and the public. “Let’s defy those predictions.”

“A few perpetrators of evil do not represent us” or “control us,” the Speaker noted.

“As the president rightfully said, justice will be done,” Ryan echoed of President Obama who earlier on Friday morning stated, “Anyone involved in the senseless murders will be held fully accountable. Justice will be done.”

Ryan called to let the healing begin, saying it has been a hard week and a hard month for the country, but hinted to not allow a debate on gun control divide the country.

“We’ve seen terrible senseless things. Every member of this body…wants to see less gun violence. Every member of this body wants a world in which people feel safe regardless of the color of their skin,” Ryan stated. “Sometimes we disagree on how to get there…but in having this debate, lets not lose sight of the values that unite us.”

“Let’s not lose sight in our common humanity.”
