An Orange County, New York woman named Esther Levy says she was kicked out of a popular Mexican restaurant called Cancun Inn Restaurant on Sunday for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat and a Donald Trump for president button.
“I was shocked,” Levy told the New York Post. “She [the waitress who served her] seemed very surprised by it all and was told to refuse us service.
Levy, who was dining with retired local judge Alvin Goldstein, said, “We just got up and started to leave.”
Levy said someone claiming to be the restaurant’s co-owner chided her and Goldstein for supporting the presumptive Republican presidential nominee as they exited the eatery.
“On the way out, the co-owner decided to yell at me and humiliate me,” Levy said. “He said, ‘We don’t serve Trump supporters here. Get out of here and never come back.'”
Judge Goldstein told the Post that the man vocally supported Hillary Clinton, as they walked out of the restaurant.
“The man told me that Hillary was going to win,” Goldstein said. “I certainly won’t be back there. It was horrific what happened. I’m not used to being thrown out of restaurants.”
After being hit by a barrage of criticism on its Facebook page by users promising to boycott, the Cancun Inn denied Levy’s version of events and claimed she was asked to leave because her party was “rude” and “rowdy.”
“An employee of ours asked the patrons to leave because they were being rude to the staff and rowdy,” read a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
Levy took to Facebook and quickly denied the Cancun Inn’s claims, noting that she was booted for being a Trump supporter.
“That’s ridiculous,” she said. “They made it very clear why we were kicked out. It was because I was a Trump supporter, and that’s it.”
Normally open on weekdays, the Cancun Inn Restaurant was closed for business on Monday and Tuesday following the incident that occurred over the Independence Day weekend.
Levy said she was especially hurt by what happened because she supported the Mexican eatery for 25 years.
“I know one of the owners. He would greet me every time I came in,” she said. “I never had a problem. But he wasn’t there on Sunday, and I didn’t recognize this guy.”
