The notorious left-wing National Catholic Reporter has called Breitbart News the Pravda of the Conservative movement, bemoaning Breitbart’s unmasking of St Petersburg Bishop Robert Lynch (pictured) who recently sought to blame Christians’ moral opposition to homosexual sex for the Orlando jihadi massacre.

NCR’s Michael Sean Winters took issue with an article by Breitbart’s Dr. Thomas D. Williams, who criticized what Winters called “the stunningly honest and empathetic statement by Bishop Robert Lynch after the massacre in Orlando,” saying he wished there were “more bishops with the courage and the compassion of Bishop Lynch.”

In his article, Williams pointed out the absurdity of linking the heinous actions of a 29-year-old Muslim who never stepped foot in a Catholic Church to a supposed Catholic “contempt” for homosexuality.

In his blogpost Monday, Bishop Robert Lynch said that Catholicism “targets” and “often breeds contempt for gays, lesbians and transgender people.” The seed of contempt, he said, turns into hatred, “which can ultimately lead to violence.” Unless this attitude changes, he states, “we can expect more Orlandos.”

This is the statement that Michael Sean Winters found to be so “stunningly honest and empathetic.” For many others, the exploitation of a human tragedy like the Orlando massacre to exert pressure on Christians to change their moral teaching regarding homosexuality is anything but honest or courageous. It is vile and opportunistic.

Despite Bishop Lynch’s accusation that Catholics “target” homosexuals, there is nothing in Catholic teaching that would suggest this.

Basing itself on biblical doctrine, the Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered” but that homosexual persons “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity” and that every “sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.”

Michael Sean Winters undoubtedly meant to slur Breitbart by associating it with Pravda, the Soviet news agency. Breitbart “is to conservative politics what Pravda was to the communist party,” he wrote.

Nonetheless, in Russian, “Pravda” (правда) translates into “truth,” which is what really gets under liberals’ skin. In this sense, Breitbart owns the slur, taking it as a backhanded compliment.
