During the month of May, gun-controlled Chicago witnessed “nearly 400” shot and 66 persons killed.
The violence brought Chicago’s 2016 death toll to “at least 250” and raised the number of shootings to “more than 1,500.”
According to the Chicago Tribune, May 2016 was the deadliest May since 1995, when 75 people were gunned down. Last month was so violent that Memorial Day weekend alone witnessed 63 shootings with 6 fatalities.
The Tribune previously reported that 40 were shot and four had been killed by the halfway point of Memorial Day weekend.
The Chicago Police Department blames the surging gun violence on “gang conflicts and a proliferation of guns, mixed with weak gun law enforcement.” The violence comes in spite of Chicago’s “assault weapons” ban, their “violence tax,” their continuing strict restrictions on handguns, and their stringent limitations on the number of gun stores and the location of those stores.
