Over the last week, left-wing Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has engaged in a full frontal Twitter assault on GOP frontrunner Donald Trump, causing many to feel she is angling to become Hillary Clinton’s Vice Presidential running mate.
“Dripping with disdain,” is how Huffington Post characterized Warren’s Twitter fusillade against the real estate mogul. Indeed, in Tweet after Tweet Warren calls Trump sexist, a scam artist, reckless, and embarrassing.
But some feel Warren’s interest was less about Trump and more about Hillary taking notice and offering Warren the VP slot.
One unnamed source inside Hillary’s camp reported that “very influential people in the campaign” are “pushing” for Warren to be offered the number two slot on the Democrat ticket.
“You want a running mate who can take the fight to the other side with relish,” another Clinton aide said. “Geography does not matter, but attitude and talent and energy and bringing excitement to the campaign, Senator Warren does all that.”
Indeed, if Clinton were to add Warren to the Democrat ticket, it may go a long way toward Hillary’s attempt to reconnect with the far left of the Democrat Party. Warren was the most favored likely candidate during most of 2014 and 2015, until she finally convinced supporters she was not interested in running for the top job. Since then the far left has yet to come back to Hillary and many have instead turned to self-avowed socialist Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, whose insurgent candidacy is still vexing team Clinton.
For much of 2015, an effort to draft Warren as the Democrat’s candidate went on for months and for much of that time, Warren let her boosters carry on without telling them to stand down.
Warren did eventually and firmly shut the door to the 2016 nomination and many feel she would be just as disinterested in being Hillary’s VP. Regardless, speculation is strong that her recent Tweetstorm against Trump is a sort of application for the number two job.
