On Sunday Kansas lawmakers in the House and Senate passed legislation prohibiting any ban on public employees carrying guns for self-defense on the job.
The House passed the measure by a vote of 93-27, and the Senate passed it by a vote of 32-6.
According to The Wichita Eagle, the bill–HB 2502–says “says public employers, such as cities and counties, cannot forbid employees from carrying concealed weapons while on duty.” This would cover the employees while they are at their offices as well as out in the community doing their jobs.
Senator Forrest Knox (R-Altoona) said, “Public employers should not have the power to endanger their employees by restricting them from carrying a firearm for protection.”
Representative Annie Tietze (D-Topeka) complained that the bill will allow “a city code inspector [to] come to your home carrying a concealed weapon.” Tietze described this as “unpractical and dangerous.”
HB 2502 also deals with air guns on school property–an issue which came up after a BB gun club that met on an elementary school campus for 30 years was voted down over “safety concerns” last year. HB 2502 “[requires] school districts to open their campuses to air gun clubs. It prevents them from adopting policies to prohibit students bringing air guns to school property if they are participating in a club’s activities.”
