On Breitbart News Daily Wednesday morning, author of True Reagan: What Made Ronald Reagan Great and Why It Matters James Rosebush sat down with host Stephen K. Bannon to explain how former president Ronald Reagan shepherded the U.S. through difficult times without losing sight of his core convictions.
“You can’t get there without character and knowing what you believe,” Rosebush said. “You said Ronald Reagan was a strong person when he went to Berkley. Why was he strong? Because he had deeply-held convictions and a belief system that gave him the fuel, the intelligence, the mouthpiece to be able to say what he needed to say. And for people to hear that — you know, people long for this.”
Rosebush, who also served as a former deputy assistant to Reagan and the chief of staff to First Lady Nancy Reagan, said Reagan’s use of affirmation and repetition helped create in the minds of Americans a hopeful vision of the future — even as economic turmoil and the Cold War loomed large.
“The media would often ridicule Reagan because he said the same thing over and over again. But when you heard it, it was critically important you heard those things over and over again. Because when you do that — you know, he was a master at repetition. And when you repeat critically important things, you being to understand them and to believe them, and to have the confidence,” he said.
That vision welded with Reagan’s principles gave the nation a way forward, Rosebush said.
“So right now, we have such complex and so many problems overwhelming the world, but Reagan gave hope. He always said America’s best days are ahead,” Rosebush said. “He always felt America was here to serve the entire world, not just the American people or the American economy. So, he was a tireless worker for that. But it gave him… His speeches sort of glistened, because when he said something, he was never going to say something, and people knew it, unless he really believed it.”
