A female student at San Francisco State University was filmed confronting a male fellow student over his dreadlocks, accusing him of “cultural appropriation.”
The female student is black; the dreadlocked male student is white. The video was posted to YouTube on Monday.
“You’re saying that I can’t have [inaudible] hair style because of your culture? Why?” he asks. She replies: “Because it’s my culture.”
The male student tries to leave the argument, but the female student blocks him, pushes him, and pulls him back down the stairs. She then approaches the person filming the event and puts her hand on the camera, pushing it away.
Campus officials confirmed to local news outlet KRON that they are investigating the incident, which they confirmed took place Monday.
Dreadlocks became popular with the rise of reggae in the 1970s and 1980s. Bob Marley sang an ode to the hairstyle in “Natty Dread“:
